Review – Career to Treasury Corporate Funding

NHC Distinguished Speaker Series (DSS) was honored to have Gabriel Wong to present “Career to Treasury Corporate Funding” on February 21st, 2019.

Gabriel Wong is the Senior Treasury Manager in the Funding and Corporate Treasury at BMO Financial Group. Gabriel held bachelor’s degree of Arts (Commerce) from University of Toronto and MBA degree from Schulich School of Business. In addition, he held bachelor’s degree of Laws at York University. Gabriel shared his career experience in exploration in law society and the decision he made to turn his career to banking. He started from Scotia Bank in Hong Kong office and later came back to Toronto working in TD and then BMO.

In second part, Gabriel gave a detailed introduction of core functions in the treasury department of banking industry including liquidity management, fund transfer pricing, risk management, capital and funding group. And funding team is mainly to help bank issue bonds under regulations and compliance. Following that, Gabriel thoroughly explained how each function in treasury department specialized and collaborated on covered bond projects and went further to the similarities and differences of funding instruments from issuing and execution process perspectives. In Q&A section, Gabriel emphasized that bank will consider multiple perspectives including the pricing, diversification and market capacity in terms of the decisions on raising funding.
